    Connecting Data, Connecting People: A Tool for Evaluating and Scoring Planned Projects

    This tool was created for TxDOT to assist the department's various departments, divisions and offices in managing and prioritizing projects. A scoring system was created for personnel to evaluate projects based on funding availability, project phasing and readiness, and how it fits within the department's strategic goals. The results inform future investments based on consistent assessment metrics, assisting decisions made by the legislature, department leadership, and state and local stakeholders

    Optimizing PennDOT’s Snow Routes and Planning Process with GIS

    In an effort to save money throughout the state and the DOT's operations, a Snow Route Planning Application was created to address data gaps needed to assess winter operations as well as create better snow routing maps and deployment strategies to ensure equipment is being used efficiently. High level reports, developed for executive staff, allowed easy then easily drill downs to specific counties and truck assignments, making it easy to identify outliers and areas of focus. Items influenced by this project include policy creation, training needs, and personnel and equipment management.

  3. GIS as a Tool to Develop Opportunities for Resource Sharing between Agencies

    Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) worked together to develop opportunities to share resources that would create mutual benefits. Facility Management data from both agencies was collected and mapped using GIS to show potential facilities that could be shared between the two agencies, resulting in cost savings, increased productivity, and enhanced communication and cooperation between the two agencies. From data shared between the two agencies, agency officials made a strategic work plan for inter-agency collaboration that resulted in project savings of over $20 million.

    We Move Massachusetts Planning for Performance Tool

    WMM is the first Long Range Transportation Plan for Massachusetts. The goal was to support multi-modal programmatic funding and performance trade-off analysis in support of the Administration’s efforts to convince the state legislature to increase transportation capital funding. The Tool is also being used to assess the impact of funding allocations on MassDOT’s primary goals. Written in a non-technical and highly graphic way, it is intended to convey, to both high-level policy makers and informed stakeholders, the programmatic and policy choices available to the state. The Planning for Performance Tool is a simple spreadsheet tool which can be used by MassDOT managers now and in the future to analyze “what if” funding scenarios and receive real time feedback on a series of performance measures

    Maryland SHA GIS-Centric Data Management System for Implementing TMDL Initiative

    Maryland SHA launched a solution using GIS technology to map and track data on water quality infrastructure assets that are built or planned by SHA. The focus of this is to plan, design, and implement water quality treatment strategies. The map-centric and centralized data management system supports executive decision making at the State, county and watershed levels. The map visualizations add value to all levels of executive and project communications, including outreach to citizens and external stakeholders.

    Maryland SHA Mobility & Economy Dashboard

    In 2014, SHA developed a web-based Mobility and Economy Dashboard which provides stakeholders with access to the data from the accompanying Mobility Report in greater detail. The application provides the user the ability to explore the mobility performance metrics by year and hour of day for various specified locations, such as the entire State, or specific region or corridor. Information is communicted through charts, tables, and maps, and allows the user to view changes over a 24 hour period, identify problem areas, and overlay mitigation strategies.

    Maryland SHA Mobility Report

    The inaugural Mobility Report was published in 2012 and documents congestion and reliability performance along state-maintained freeways and expressways for the previous year, as well as mitigation strategies implemented to address mobility challenges, and the outcomes of those strategies. Each subsequent Annual Mobility Report uses the previous year’s metrics as a benchmark to gauge changes in performance along the network and facilitate data-driven decision making for more efficient investments. Useful for both internal and external communications, this report contains detail reports on the following: Mobility & Reliability, Incident Management & Traveler Information Systems, Multi-Modalism & Smart Growth, Freight, Regionally Significant Corridor Performance, and Statewide Most Congested Locations.

    This document provides a brief snapshot of all of ODOT's performance measures. In a clear format, each measure is associated with archived data, numeric goals, progress made, as well as any key complementary information associated with each measure.     Updated on a monthly basis, this tool provides an of overview of how Virginia DOT is performing across several different areas, including road quality, safety, project delivery and funding. Archived data is provided to show trends over time.

    MAPSS Travel Time Report

    This document is an example on the detailed analysis that WIDOT provides on a quarterly basis for all of its performance measures. This particular document explains in an attractive way how well WIDOT is meeting its goals on travel time reliability and delays, how performance is measured, and the efforts in place to improve performance.
